Age in place is all about long term planning

You don’t have to be “of a certain age" to enjoy these tips but my mature clients enjoy the benefits of some simple forward planning and so might you.

Let’s start this series of blogs with an easy one - something we all deal with on at least a weekly basis, the washing machine.

I advocate upgrading your machines to the larger “American style” units for the following reasons. You fit more in so that means fewer loads to work through.  You will use less water as a result and the new machines come with all the technology to allow you to make greener washing choices. Both washer and dryer come with large portholes that make loading and unloading easy.

To make using them even easier I raise the machines up. Bending, or squatting, is almost no longer necessary. Some brands have a pre made drawer unit in a matching finish to order but I think you get a nicer finish and a more bespoke solution if you build the machines into a larger wall unit, as you see above.

Pull out shelving, drawers, open sections for baskets, cupboards, whatever works for you. A built-in solution that looks smart and is functional.  Why not have a laundry that looks good?  I recommend a laminate finish for easy cleaning and avoiding timber laminates in an area prone to moisture is always a good idea.
